15 year old is thinking- 40- one is "dead"
40 year old is thinking- "nah, 50 is "dead"
50 year old is thinking- "now 60 - that's dead"
60 year old is thinking- "no, I am still here, now 80 is "dead"

Middle age is anytime one feels mortality, or sense of not enough accomplishment (resolve), and not enough time to accomplish everything one sets out to do, or in some cases- I have a house, a wife, kid(s), a car, now what? (most often one or both parents are gone). Anyhow, middle age is a form of depression and only an outside influence can help to overcome it (most often that is achieved by falling for a member of the opposite sex, usually much younger). I've known some people who have "hit" that middle age stage being in their twenties, only having to come out of that by taking vacations away from the mundane, daily routines(by the by, routine life can drive one to depression), out to Europe or some lyudnoe mesto (versus in a trailer, driving down a lonely state highway, or a malolyudni' island someplace exotic). One night stands DO help! (check Natka's question and my response in another forum)

I think when someone understands that that special mood/state of mind he/she has at the moment causes by or can lead to the depression; he/she is already on the road to recovery. The most difficult part is to realize it and admit.
Also, I think if person has a goal ahead or an interest in the life (not necessarily a love, it could be passion to painting, dancing, etc) he/she is less likely to be hit by so called “middle age crisis”.

I think it happens when there is (or seems like) “no light ahead”. Kind of “all the best is in the past, what I am doing here on Earth?” Типа: В чём смысл Жизни?

I know all my problems and all the causes...
yet I still suffer from depression 24/7 since 1980 :D
sometimes you just can't beat chemical disbalance :)

I agree also.

Sophisticated people, especially creatively gifted, are not easily understood by others which can lead to isolation and depression. Simple minds appeal to the lowest common denominator and are always going to be more popular.

What I find ironic is that most drug abusers are actually not all that sophisticated in the first place. They could not find another way to stimulate their brain cells, I guess, so they had to use chemistry.
