Dear Alan,
I sent my papers (I-485, I-130, etc) one month ago and got confirmation from postal office that INS received them on January, 27. I didn't receive any confirmation letter from INS with A number or invitation to come in and pick up my authorization for work.
How long usually it takes them to respond, or should I call them to know if they received my papers?

I can only give you an answer from San Francisco, which is where I practice. Currently, the time from INS in San Francisco until you receive the receipt (and later an appointment letter) is about 6 weeks. if you are in a different city, you might want to go to the INS office and ask the time frame.
