1. Bay Area Economic Outlook
Ask an average single guy in the Silicon Valley what concerns them the most, and they will readily tell you that it is a near total drought in the local pool of datable women. Ask any of the growing number of highly qualified unemployed and they will tell you that it is the lack of open technical positions at the local companies. In fact, consider the following local and national economic facts:
NASDAQ stock market index is currently near it's five year lows and potentially heading even lower. Compare the current NASDAQ charts with 1929 Dow charts, if you don't believe that this is possible.
San Jose unemployment rate persistently and significantly higher this year than it has been for over a decade, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Data
US Dollar continuing to show weakness against other major world currencies over the past year, according to the historical currency exchange data from Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
U.S. corporations have already set a record for bankruptcies this year - 129 publicly traded companies with total assets of $267.6 Billion filed. Among the filers were such giants as Enron, WorldCom and Adelphia - all victims of corporate fraud, improper accounting, mishandling of assets and industry overcapacity.
It is no wonder National Security is top on President Bush's priority list. After the brutal attacks of 9/11, almost a year ago now, the threat of terrorism in the US, is now higher than it has ever been.
The above facts do not leave any questions about the current state of the California and US Economies. However, the official numbers continue to indicate a recovery already in progress, with the recently released Q2, 2002 GDP growth rate at a paltry, but positive 1.1%. This in light of 0% auto loans, mortgage interest rates being at their lowest levels in over 31 years and other lending rates hovering at 40 and 50 year lows, is another bad sign for the economy! Nevertheless, the low interest rates do explain why prices have not fallen on Bay Area's less expensive homes - look for this to change over the next 6 months!
2. Child Care and Development
Seemingly ignoring all economic and demographic facts, the Bay Area is apparently experiencing a new baby boom and our own Russian-speaking community is participating full-force. If you don't believe it, all you have to do is to take a look at SF.Baraban.Com Classifieds, http://www.baraban.org/classifieds/index.php?f=10 - it seems like every family is looking for a nanny there. Other jobs are few and far between, but mothers who are lucky enough to hold on to theirs, are eager to hire caretakers for their young, and rush off to work, sometimes only weeks after giving birth. Some are motivated by their goals to climb the corporate ladder, while others simply do what they must to preserve their lifestyle in the Bay Area. Those that want to stay at home longer often choose to leave this high-priced area.
With demand for live-in help in the Bay Area continuing to soar, prices for nanny services are continuing to increase, as well. These days, parents are ready to shell out from $1200 to $1400 per month in cash, cover all personal expenses and provide above par private accommodations for nannies looking after one or two kids. Even so, many are having a tough time finding a trustworthy caretaker for their kids. Frustrated with their search for a nanny, they turn to a licensed child care program, like Pinocchio Children Day Care Center in San Francisco's Sunset District, as an alternative. With weekday working hours from 7:30AM to 6:30PM, convenient location, large rooms and backyard, a rigorous educational program, including reading, math, sports, music and dance, four home made meals a day and professional bilingual staff, this day care center answers most parents' needs. For more information and to enroll your two months or older child, please email edmundich@hotmail.com or call (415) 242-0255.
And what do you do when you want to give your child the best birthday party ever? That's the question that crept into Alla Perelman's mind one day and it would not go away, until she created Party in Wonderland. Imagine making your child's birthday even more exciting, wonderful and fantastic, imagine a birthday party with Spiderman or clowns, pirates, princesses or knights. Or how about a birthday in the jungle? Party in Wonderland is fully bilingual and they create custom Halloween and New Year Parties too. Alla's favorite saying is "We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing!" So, if you don't want to grow old, make sure your next party is a Party in Wonderland. To arrange it, visit http://www.partyinwonderland.com , email Alla Perelman at perelman@jps.net or call (408)621-3606.
