You should wait at least 60 days after your arrival in the US before you apply for student F-1 status. This is important. You will not be able to work for either 6 months or 1 year after you get F-1 status. (I forget which it is, but the foreign student advisor of your university can tell you). When you apply you must state believable reasons why you want to change from your visitors visa to become a student. This is important and often gives INS a reason to reject you application to change to student status. Good Luck, ALLAN SAMSON
