AOS and Work Authorization

My wife came here on a K-1 visa. I need to get her status changed so that she can get a conditional green card and a work authorization to apply for a Social Security #.

I hired an attorney to get the K-1 done for me. Is it possible and what is involved in getting the next steps done without using an attorney and paying several hundred dollars more in legal fees?

she should apply for adjustment of status on Form I-485 together with your Affidavit of Support and supporting documents.
