Recently I attended a party where everyone was either a RN or an LVN. They all seemed to be employed and doing OK, even in this economy. Most off them were strongly advising others to join the field.
From what I understand, it was a “hot job” several years ago, but what about now and later?

My brother-in-law became an RN about a year ago - he likes it a lot. He is saying that there are fewer sick people at the hospital these days, so they have cut everyone's hours.

Perhaps less people can afford to be sick now days:)
I know that most nurses like what they do, and all have no problem getting work. No ved' rynok ne rezinovyj?

Honey, don't rush into anything. In the times of crisis, health care thrives, for sure - but they are looking for cuts in that direction, too, in the States as well, I believe, and nurses are vulnerable.
Plus: it takes 4 years of education to become a nurse. You may become a nursing aid, but it's a different story entirely. In any case, unless you have the Master's in the field, I believe that across North America it's a burdernsome, exhausting, physical job... On top of it, it's only people that are permanently employed that enjoy the salary, security and benefits... There is a hiring freeze across Canada - and I don't think the situation is very different in the States - my friend who is a nurse and myself were lucky enough to apply for jobs and get into the system before it happened, but it was a close call. Private health-related practices are struggling. A number of private psychology practices that I know are facing bankruptcy. If you go into nursing, as a casual - contract - worker, you won't get ANYTHING out of it. Please consider it further. And think long-term, too. When I was choosing a career, everyone was rushing into computers, because it was a "hot" field. Nowadays, it's public health care and education that matter - but for who long? Many people are rushing into it, that I know for sure, and things may not work out so well for the newcomers. Once you are in, if we are talking about essential clinical services, you are in - but they may just not let you in, and you will waste several years getting the education that won't do you any good...
Sorry, babe, don't mean to put the damper on your plans, but I just read your posts and started to get concerned... Even though I am in Canada, not in the States, I still suspect I am a slightly better authority on these questions than your correspondant Mark... :):)
PS: miss you, will call you soon!!

if you like stable job and decent pay (95 - 130k) and can put up with somewhat boring working environment, and have BA, why don't you consider career of a Pharmacist? you dont need to deal with patients, and you can have flexibility of working either at hospital, department store pharmacy, or have a private business.
you would need to get masters degree for that, and it takes 4 yrs but i know people getting that done in 3 yrs.

the biggest demand is for janitors :) i think to be RN and work with people one requires призвание.
any way: do your homework to make the right decision. фаpмацевтов очень не хватает и с работой никаких проблем нет, most grad schools guarantee a job placement ;) сравни среднюю зарплату RN и фармацевта v LA or for any zip code on salary.com you'll see that pharmacists start at where the highest paid RNs are. if you feel lazy, here is another info to look at the 100s of job ads for pharmacists offering over 140k in CA http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=Pharmacist+%24130%2C000&l=California

depends... like with any new profession, gr. designers profession evolves and requires growing improvements from people... what was paying a lot cash 10 years ago, today could be done much cheaper and much faster. nowadays there are some diff specialties just in graphic design and animation... but again to be good and make good money you have to be good at it ;)
