I own my own business and I need to know how I can make sure my family is taken care of if anything were to happen to me. I don’t want them to have to go through legal troubles because I didn’t prepare. What can I do? I have a personal will and trust through my Law Firm in San Diego (http://www.walterstrustinfo.com), but I don’t think that covers my business. I know there are ways to protect my business, but I want to learn more. Do I need a special laywer? Or can any estate planning lawyer (http://www.stolar-law.com) help?

Protecting your family as a small business owner requires a multidisciplinary approach. You need to put together a package of insurance, trusts, and business succession documents which will all work together to make sure that your business debts are taken care of, your business assets are sold and the proceeds distributed to your family, or that your business continues in operation and your family remains in control. To answer this question adequately though, one needs to know more details about your business, your family, and your goals.

I work for a life insurance company, upon your death the company will give your designated beneficiary all the death benefits income tax free. But make sure to choose the company right and shop for prices of the premiums. If you need my help I can explain you more. Also, if you have business partners that you depend a lot, you can insure them so in case something happens to your partner, you will receive his/her death benefit and invest into your business.
