Not that intellectual, but definitely fun to read - I remember there are some Harry's fans in our baraban's community.
Who has read it, who wants to participate in a discussion about the final installment and the series in general?:)
A minor spoiler: things turned out exactly the way I expected

Can someone explain to me what the big deal is about these books? I saw a line that wrapped arround a bookstore at midnight on the night that the latest book came out. :puzzled:

Did not read the books but I like the movies they made. Just saw it last week.

A guilty pleasure - and once you get hooked, you just keep on reading:)

Yes, they are so grown up now (actors) - by the time they shoot the last one, they will probably be close to our age:)
I like the books better, but the movies are cool, too.
My favourite character in the books and in the movies has always been Snape:)

Yeah, I really don't get the hype. I didn't read the book, but I after watching the first movie (which is too kiddy) I decided against reading any of the Harry Potter books.

Harry Potter movies are entertaining in their own way, but don't do justice to the books:)

Я прочитала "The lion, the witch, and the wardrobe" и мне говорили что они по стилю похожи...

My haircuts-lady reads it right now. She says she likes this book less than all the previous ones, because it got less action going on.
I never read any of them. Should I read some to my 6 y.old?

Hmm... The first one is kids-oriented, but it does have some scary scenes towards the end - perhaps you should look it over first. (Then again some kids can read any book at any age. I am going with the average level of maturity for a certain age right now). It would be quite all right once kids are 8-10 years old. The second and the third book are still appropriate for this age range. With the fourth one, I would aim for the age of 12 - or at least that level of maturity. The rest of the books could be read at the age of 13 and onwards.
Here's my personal PG rating, lol:)
PS: oops, I wanted to edit this post, but actually posted another one - see below.

Well, let me justify my rating, actually (SPOILER ALERT):
Book I: a nice orphan boy is horribly treated by his relatives - then discovers that his parents were killed by an evil magician when he was a child. Goes to a magic school, breaks some school rules, fights the magician by the end of the book - there is a somewhat scary scene - all ends well.
Book II: the boy goes on other adventures with his fellow schoolmates at the magic school. Fights the magician, fears for his friends' safety at some point - all ends well.
Book III: the boy doesn't really fight the magician in this book, but has some cool adventures. Fears for the safety of his animal and human friends - all ends well. This book is really good.
Book IV: the boy has more adventures, fights the magician. A positive character, not central to the story, dies at the end of the book. Cheating is somewhat condoned at school, at least in a sense when you can get your brainy friend take notes during classes and correct your homework.
Book V: the boy goes through the adolescent phase of anger and frustration, fights the magician of course. A major character - sort of a father figure - dies at the end of the book. There is also a first kiss scene. The boy finds out that he idealized his dead parents, has to deal with it.
Book VI: The boy continues with his anger, frustration, ya-da, ya-da. Fights the magician, moves on to his second gf. A major character - an omnipotent demi-god figure - dies. Finds out that there is more to people that he knows and hates than meets the eye. This is my favourite book actually.
Book VII. The boy grows less hysterical, which is a relief at this point. Gets laid. Fights the magician. Lots of characters dies, human & non-human. The boy finds out that his mom was possibly in love with someone else before she hooked up with his dad. He also discovers that his favourite character on the side of Good is actually a shady manipulator. The boy apparently decides he is ok with that.
The end: everybody who survived gets married and has kids.

:)

Yeah, Rowling really shocked the fans.
I don't think it's material in any way to the book series. It's a children's book and all that r-rated stuff should be kept out of it. However...
If I remember correctly, the books are intended to be read one grade/year. So if the first book is read by a 10 year-old, the last one is intended to be read by a 17 year-old. By that age teenagers are supposed to know enough about these matters and educated enough to be tolerant.

My son is 11, and obviously is a great fan of Harry Potter. I didn't pay much attention to Rowling's announcement until my son came to me wide eyed. He just couldn't process this info. He is troubled by it.

That's what happens when gay movement gets out of hands. I really didn't care about them one way or another. Now I'm beginning to side with biggest conservatives.

Well... yeah, but in the book itself there's nothing that would seem obscene or troubling, is there? I actually re-read the passages and there's nothing out of the ordinary that could not be found in, say, "The 3 Musketeers". ;)
It's the announcement itself that's troubling. So perhaps you should have been controlling what your son reads? ;) (I am kiddin', of course). There's just so much of similar/or way more troubling things he can read, it's impossible to control.

And I do check, what he is reading. But that was on Yahooligans.

so you guys think the author might use this announcement to get more attention from adult audience to her books which would translate in more $ since from reader's perspective there is really nothing 'special' about dumbledore's behavior?

Well, she just lost a potential customer in my face. I was planning to buy her new mystery/detective books. I'm not going to do that now.
And I do have all 7 Harry Potter books already.

What if tomorrow he will decide to be Dumbledore????

Сказка оно на то и сказка, что детей находят в капусте.

So what? If he pretends to be the Dumbledore from the book - an old wizard with a long beard - fine. Just as long as he does not decide to be the Dumbledore from the announcement ;)
